L O V E - A DesignU Exercise
This timeless 4 letter word has so much to say. We look to the Iconic Fashion Designer & Company Yves Saint Laurent for inspiration this month. YSL’s LOVE posters are a kind reminder of the infinite possibilities one subject can inspire.
The posters were designed once a year, and became a tradition for the brand. Below are a few examples highlighting the diversity in expression. Most of the Posters were designed with cut paper, paint and ink.
Make a LOVE design.
How to:
In a matter of minutes - jot down what LOVE brings up for you. Think about LOVE - does it feel freeing, light, romantic, friendly, tumultuous, peaceful….does it make you anxious or excited…? (There are NO wrong answers.)
When you look at your notes – What colors, shapes, images, and letterforms come to mind?
On paper or through a digital design tool - casually sketch out a few options playing with the 4 letters L, O, V, E.
How do you best communicate what LOVE means to you - using these 4 letters?
- Should they be a specific color?
- Is there a typeface or lettering style that is most effective?
- What shape is your design? Vertical or Horizontal?
- Are there images you wish to include?After Sketching - PAUSE
A few hours later, go back to your sketches.
Do you like what you see?Choose one sketch, tweak it or rework it until you’ve designed something you enjoy.

How is this Design? Design starts with investigation and eventually provides a solution. This DesignU exercise allows you to tune into what LOVE means to you (at this time) and offers you a chance to communicate your discoveries around this self exploration. This is an exercise in Communication Design, and does not require previous talent to explore. Make it easy, keep it light - and try it sometime.
